DESIGN
If you want a professional web site design that places you ahead of your competition and really communicates with your prospective customers, clients, or audience -- I can help.
I have been designing for the web since 1997, first as lead web designer for USWeb/CKS in Phoenix, then in 1999 I struck out on my own with Design 4 Results. I have been fortunate to have some of the best clients I can imagine, and I am committed to supporting their success in every way.
Before 1997 I worked in print, so for certain projects I can also provide print design services (keep this a secret, though!)
DEVELOP
HTML / CSS / Javascript / RSS
I hand code all XHTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and MySQL. In the past I attempted to use tools like Dreamweaver instead of hand coding but found it was like trying to do surgery with oven mitts on. So now I have created methods of hand coding that are very efficient.
Preferred tools and technologies:
PHP / MySQL
I have been building dynamic websites since 2000. Beyond adapting or customizing pre-existing software packages, I have written two shopping carts, one content management system and a number of database driven websites.
I understand:
- Separation of presentation, business logic, and data model (Model-View-Controller (MVC) paradigm)
- Writing clean, reusable encapsulated code
- Normalized database design, and writing and optimizing SQL queries
Content Management
Every site I deliver includes a web-based password protected content management system through which the client can easily add, change or remove site content. I primarily recommend two different systems based upon the needs of my clients. Each of these can be customized to publish nearly any type of content, from news, events promotion, real estate listings, photo galleries, audio and video content, ecommerce...
eCommerce
If you are selling online you may already have experience with shopping cart solutions and you may be unhappy with what you find. I have successfully installed/configured/customized a number of pre-existing shopping carts: osCommerce, Xcart, Americart, ShopSite, Paypal; and looked into many, many more. In the end, I found each of these solutions lacking in important features or flexibility. As a result, I developed a custom shopping cart that connects to installations of MovableType or Wordpress for inventory management. Because I developed this cart myself, it is very easy to adapt to the specific design and functionality needs of my clients. This cart is currently processing a high volume of business for Fabulous Stationery (www.fabulousstationery.com).
The cart has the following features and more:
- inventory management
- sale pricing, gift certificates, coupons
- real-time transaction processing through Authorize.net
- shipping cost calculators, domestic and international, for UPS, USPS and FedEx
- automatic email receipts
- automatic shipping label generation
- order management interface
- custom reporting (revenue, cost of goods sold, best sellers, etc.)
Ad Server
If you generate revenue through your site from advertising, there is the excellent open-source ad server that will serve you well: OpenAds (www.openads.com). I have experience installing, managing, configuring, migrating to, and upgrading this software.
Hosting
If you need your site moved from one server to another, I know how to do this with the least amount of interruption to your site and your email services. I have experience with many webhosts: Rackspace, Pair Networks, Joyent/TextDrive, Interland, Dreamhost, Canvas Dreams, and many others. For most of my clients I find that MediaTemple (www.mediatemple.com) offers the best quality of service at the best price. They provide a simple, elegant webmail interface, 24-hour tech support, and make it easy for me to get my job done when I set up databases, configure email accounts, install software, publish websites, etc.
Migrating from system to system
If your current system is not meeting your needs, I can help you assess the situation and if needed can migrate your content from one database schema to another. For example, from Wordpress to MovableType, or Shopsite to a custom shopping cart, or whatever is required.
ANALYZE | OPTIMIZE
Analytics / Optimization
Once your site is live, it is then important to track the performance you are getting and make key optimizations. Every site I deliver has (the amazingly free) Google Analytics installed. We can spot trends in visitors, bounce rates, loyalty, goals, revenues and other key performance indicators and thereby make intelligent decisions on what to improve about the site to increase profitability.
SUPPORT
I provide support services to current clients, during (and sometimes outside of) normal business hours.
Training
In most cases I can show you in an hour or two how to manage everything on your site that you care to manage. I have helped people at all experience levels learn how to use different types of systems so I can easily adapt my presentation to the way in which you learn best.
GUARANTEE
While I cannot actually guarantee specific profits from a website, I will not take on a project unless I feel you will get a return on your investment. And everything I do for you will work toward that outcome. I work for profitable websites right now, so I know what it takes from first hand experience.
VALUE
I think the greatest value I provide my clients is a very specific economy: because I understand business and marketing, because I am able to deliver agency quality design AND because I can code - you save tons of money.
Compare this to a situation where you would be hiring a separate person for each of these functions and then managing the project yourself or hiring someone to manage it and the economies in cost and time become fairly plain.
Komra Moriko is skilled, professional and personable, and the website that she's designed for us has almost doubled our product income in less than a year's time.

Owner/Manager, McConnell Publishing, Ltd.
Komra is the only designer we've ever worked with who will actually embrace a completely new way of doing things - going so far as to learn a new web language. She engages in projects with an intellectual curiosity that causes her to produce fantastic sites, exceeding not just our expectations, but what readers often think is possible.
